Kaala - Review - is it black or white!
Kaala is Rajini! The movie is layered with many intriguing ideas and it will take time to understand what the director is trying to tell in each scene! For those who are expecting Rajini of Baasha days they will find it difficult to see very little of that firepower. Baasha is classic it cannot be remade! This Kaala is purely director Ranjith movie..no doubt in that! He uses superstar's image to showcase the ideology...even the poster where in Rajini sits on the Jeep indirectly says so! Jeep is director's story and Rajini is on that to attract audience to that story!! Rajini is the star vehicle which director uses to portray the oppression being given to people of Dharavi in Mumbai!
Rajini's screen presence is awesome. He enacts the role of leader of the oppressive class to it's perfection. Mass scenes are here and there to keep his fans hooked. The rain fight scene where he kills a politician in a vendetta is one for the ages! It takes us back to the days of Baasha!!
If you are a fan of Rajini and love his acting and style, you will love this movie. His interludes with his wife Selvi and his first love Zarina is superb. His acting here is so good and matured you will enjoy it. Eshwari Rao as Selvi and Huma Querishi as Zarina prove good in their roles.
Nana Patekar is very good in the role and his encounters with Rajini are well taken. The dialogues of Rajini meeting in Nana Patekar's house is intense and both show great acting skills in that scene. Same holds true in the interval block, which is one of the highlights of the movie. Santhosh Narayan's BGM is a plus.
Story wise Ranjith strikes another good target. A faster screenplay would help him. At times movie tends to be slow as one felt in Kabaali. But this one is one better than Kabaali as Kaala has good scenes to treat Rajini fans. This is another movie where Rajini proves he is director's actor.
Overall I will give 3.5 out of 5 for this movie.
